My parents started with nothing (no money, no educ

My parents started with nothing (no money, no education) and worked very hard to create financial stability for themselves and their families.

In the same way, Rehman and I started with nothing (no guidance, no role models) and worked very hard to create relational stability for ourselves and our community.

My parents joined us for the second half of our trip to Uzbekistan and witnessed the conscious marriage we’ve created.

This was the first time they’ve seen us for more than a day after we got married 10 months ago.

Unprompted, my mom said: You’re different than how I remember you from when you lived with us.

Me: Really? What’s different?
Mom: You used to be so fearful.
Me: What did I live in fear of?
Mom: Me, I guess.
Me: It was both you and dad. But you both also lived in a lot of fear yourselves - fear of what people would say, think, or do and fear of what would happen as a result of that. So naturally, I inherited it and it took a long time for me to outgrow that.

My parents were also different than before. This time, I saw the reflection of my joyful spirit in their eyes.

They really got to enjoy me without any fears or worries holding them back. I am the dream, the seed they planted together a very long time ago (38 years to be exact!).

If Rehman and I have a child, we want to reflect that back to them more so, consciously, from the beginning. We want them to know what a delight they are to have in this world and how eternally grateful we are for their arrival.

We can do this for the next generation if we first deeply enjoy and marvel at our own existence. So let’s sing, dance, and celebrate YOU.

This week, I felt inspired by this couplet from Tu Jhoom (song by Abida Parveen and Naseebo Lal):

ashna e raz kare
